Qualitative Data Analysis with ATLAS.ti: The Fundamentals

In this workshop you learn how to analyze data qualitatively with the aid of ATLAS.ti. Participants will learn the key procedures involved in a typical analysis process. The workshop will cover analysis project set up, document organization, segmentation and coding, and data exploration and analysis.

Dr. Jordan White’s research interests center on conducting interdisciplinary research that advances the health and wellbeing of vulnerable populations, particularly Black, Latino and sexual minorities in the United States. Combining training in public health and social work, he utilizes qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods to examine health outcomes such as HIV, mental health, and correctional health across multiple levels. Dr. White’s research has been published in peer reviewed journals such as The Journal of Urban Health, AIDS and Behavior, Culture, Health and Sexuality, the Community Mental Health Journal, The Lancet HIV, Public Health Nursing and the Journal of Medical Internet Research. He received his doctorate in public health from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. White was also the inaugural Desmond Tutu Fellow of Public Health and Human Rights and the first graduate student to receive the University’s LGBTQ public health certificate. He holds a MS in Social Work from Columbia University and a BA in history and political science from Case Western Reserve University. He is the manager of training and partnership development for ATLAS.ti in the United States and Canada.

En este curso se enseñarán los procedimientos fundamentales para analizar de manera cualitativa datos con el apoyo de ATLAS.ti. El curso cubre procedimientos relacionados con la creación del proyecto de análisis, organización de los datos, segmentación y codificación, y exploración y análisis de datos.

Veronika de la Cruz Villegas(Directora de la CVAIC) es Doctora en Ciencias de la Educación por la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, México; cuenta con una maestría en Docencia por la Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco y la Licenciatura en Ciencias de la Educación de la misma universidad. Su área de desarrollo se ubica en la Licenciatura en Idiomas en la cual imparte asignaturas en el campo metodológico. Es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI), Sistema Estatal de Investigadores (SEI) y Perfil Acreditado por el Programa para el Desarrollo del Personal Docente (PRODEP) de la Subsecretaría de Educación Superior de la Secretaría de Educación Pública. Su trabajo de investigación se enfoca en el aprendizaje de vocabulario de una lengua extranjera a través del uso de la tecnología. Recientemente, ha extendido su campo de investigación enfocándose en la inclusión educativa de estudiantes con discapacidad visual en el nivel superior en el contexto de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera. Cuenta con numerosas capacitaciones sobre investigación cualitativa y ATLAS.ti. Es directora de la Comunidad Virtual de Aprendizaje de la Investigación Cualitativa (CVAIC).

 

NVivo workshops

Introduction to NVivo (Mac)

In this 3-hour introductory workshop you will learn the basics of getting started in NVivo. It is suitable for those with little to no NVivo experience. This hands-on workshop is taught in the latest version of NVivo. Participants will require their own NVivo license and would benefit by having two monitors available (one to follow the instructor, and one to practice the functions in NVivo). Topics covered include:

  • Overview and familiarization with NVivo and sample projects 
  • Importing Data (formats, organization within the NVivo project) 
  • Coding (coding structure, creating and working with codes) 
  • Notes (annotations, memos) 
Laura Lagendyk is an NVivo Certified Platinum Trainer with 20+ years’ experience leading academic and applied health research and evaluation teams and projects. She has extensive experience in all phases of qualitative research and has conducted, analysed and reported on hundreds of interviews and focus groups and a wide variety of survey data. Laura employs her expert knowledge and skills to help others learn how to work effectively in NVivo (Windows or Mac). Dedoose Workshop

Data Analysis: Getting the job done with Dedoose

This 3-hour hands-on interactive training session will introduce participants to managing and analyzing qualitative data in the cloud using Dedoose. Qualitative analysis strategies will be woven throughout the session. Participants will gain practical hands-on skills using the Dedoose application, which promotes collaboration and teamwork and the production of trustworthy results and findings.

 

Before the workshop go to www.dedoose.com and create a Dedoose account which will allow you to follow along during the session. Then download the Desktop App. Note: New Dedoose users have one month’s free access to the application (no downloaded software required).

Jose Gamez is Head of Support at Dedoose and has over 6 years’ experience working with and training others to use Dedoose. Jose regularly hosts general and specialized topical webinars about Dedoose and is responsible for training, and developing, the Dedoose support team. Currently Jose is working to develop further specialized training and support resources, for both his team and Dedoose users.
Dr. Michelle Salmona serves as President of the Institute for Mixed Methods Research (IMMR) with an academic appointment as adjunct associate professor at the University of Canberra, Australia. Michelle has 15 years’ experience as a trainer in the use of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) and data applications. In addition, she is a credentialed project management professional (PMP) and senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy, United Kingdom. Michelle is a specialist in qualitative and mixed methods research design and analysis. Her research interests provide strategies to support doctoral student success and strengthen the research process through the successful use of technology; and build data-driven decision-making capacity in the corporate world.

Quirkos Workshop

Learning Qualitative Analysis with Quirkos

This short workshop will take you step-by-step through applying different types of qualitative analysis with Quirkos, the simple and visual qualitative analysis software. We will talk about importing and managing all kinds of text data, creating codes, themes, memos and analytic text. You'll also learn how to use Quirkos to explore your analysis and create visualizations and report to help you write up your qualitative research.

Daniel Turner started Quirkos after more than a decade of doing qualitative research in academia, wanting to create software that increased access to qualitative analysis. After 8 years, Quirkos has thousands of users across the world, and Daniel remains director, personally runnning regular training sessions on Quirkos and qualitative analysis. He also writes a popular blog on qualitative methods.
